Letting Go of Who I Was: The Hardest Part of Becoming Who God Wants Me to Be

The Power of Calm Clarification

There is a moment in every rebuilding season where progress slows — not because the path is blocked, not because you lack the will, but because you’re still carrying too much of the old you.

I’m in that moment right now.

And I’m learning that the most difficult part of healing isn’t changing your habits or building new systems… It’s releasing your grip on an identity that no longer serves you.

It’s letting go of who you were.

My Deepest Why

At the center of everything I’m trying to become is this truth:

I want to become the man God wants me to be because I fundamentally believe in my divine worth and the worth of every soul.

I know — deeply, quietly, persistently — that every one of us is more than our past actions, our worst moments, or the stories we’ve believed about ourselves.

I want to love. I want to lift. I want to inspire. Not because I’m perfect, but because love is the core of who I truly am when everything else is stripped away.

I exist to love. I exist to help others rise. I exist to become the son of God I was created to be.

But even with this deep why burning inside me… I’ve been carrying ghosts.

The Identities We’re Quietly Loyal To

Here’s something I needed to admit — something you might need to admit too:

You can be doing all the right things… and still be weighed down by who you used to be.

I’ve been rebuilding my life with everything I have:

  • repenting
  • repairing
  • restructuring
  • recommitting
  • refusing to quit

And yet a part of me has been walking with a quiet, heavy loyalty to an old identity:

The dad who yelled.
The husband who regrets.
The man who believes he “failed.”
The homesteader without land yet.
The creator who hasn’t hit profitability.
The provider who feels behind.

These old versions of me aren’t here anymore. But the shame of them lingers — and shame is a terrible travel companion.

It whispers, “You haven’t earned confidence yet.”
It mutters, “You don’t deserve peace yet.”
It suggests, “You’re not allowed to love yourself until the redemption arc is complete.”

But here’s the truth that finally broke through:

My future isn’t slowed down by my limits…

It’s slowed down by my loyalty to my old identity.

I’ve been holding onto the idea that I had to earn healing.
That I had to prove myself first.
That I had to fix everything before I could breathe.

But healing doesn’t wait for worthiness.
It begins with willingness.

And willingness starts with honesty.

So here’s my honesty:

Who I am becoming matters more than who I was.

You’re Allowed to Start Fresh

I’m learning (slowly, stubbornly) that:

You’re allowed to reinvent yourself.
You’re allowed to outgrow old shame.
You’re allowed to rise even before you feel ready.
You’re allowed to love yourself in the middle of the transformation — not just at the end.

You don’t need permission to heal.
You don’t need clearance from your past.
You don’t need the approval of every person you hurt, disappointed, or failed.  They can't and won't give it anyway.

You just need to choose a new identity — the one that God already sees in you.

You just need to choose to heal.

Where I’m Going Now

I’m choosing to let go of the man I used to be.
Not by forgetting him, but by thanking him for the lessons… and releasing him so I can move forward.

I’m choosing to live from my deepest why —
to become a man rooted in love, growth, accountability, and divine purpose.

Not someday.

Now.

And if you’re reading this, maybe you’re in the same place.

Maybe your greatest transformation isn’t outside you.
Maybe it’s the quiet moment when you finally whisper:

“I am rising.”

Because that rise — slow, imperfect, steady — is how we become who we were created to be.

Gratefully,
